<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Adult music students are my absolute favorite to have in my studio. For a while though, I didn't really consider the possibility of teaching adults. I thought that people often either did something in childhood or didn't and that usually dictated what they continued with beyond their schooling years. However, there's definitely a market for teaching adults. I've seen two different types of adult lesson seekers: those who have had a dream to learn an instrument their entire life and they're finally pursuing the dream OR those who played an instrument back in their school days and they want to relearn that instrument(I had one adult flute student who wanted to be able to play duets with her son who was starting to learn clarinet in middle school).

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">Adult Students are the best because...

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">1. They actually practice.

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">I don't know about you but I find that lessons are so much more pleasant when students practice. The great thing about adult students is that most of them actually want to practice. Unlike students who are sometimes encouraged to or forced to take lessons by their parents, adult students typically spend their own money on lessons to learn something new that they actually want to do.

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">2. They have fully developed attention spans and brains.

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Don't get me wrong, I love teaching adorable 5 year olds. They're full of energy and excitement. But sometimes it can be exhausting to keep them on track. With adult students, they can easily stay focused for 30 or 60 minute lessons. I've found these lessons to be much less tiring.

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">3. They're...adults.

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Sometimes it's nice to talk to another adult. While they likely won't make you a cute, thoughtful hand drawn memento for your desk, they speak your language. Oh, and they wash their hands, which is a huge plus when strep throat is making it's rounds.

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">3 Tips for Teaching Adult Students

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">1. Make sure you have a method book for adults.

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Many method books have bright colors, cartoons, or language for children. While that's great for your younger students, your adult students will definitely appreciate an adult looking book. Make sure you have some method books to recommend. For piano students, I use <span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Alfred's Adult All-In-One Piano Book and for flute students, I use

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: xx-small;">Please note, these links are affiliate links but are the books I use in my actual studio.

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">2. Do a pre-lesson assessment of their musical skills.

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">It is really important to ask questions about prior musical experiences with adult beginners. Initially one of my adult students told me that she can't read or play. After asking her some questions, I found out that she actually played flute for three years in middle school and thought she didn't remember anything. She thought wrong by the way - although rusty at first, she quickly began remembering how to play flute and read music and was able to progress much quicker than a true beginner. Knowing this experience changed my approach to teaching her and allowed her to progress further.

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Some questions to consider:

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Have you ever played any instruments?

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Were you involved in band, choir, orchestra, or any other ensembles?

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Have you participated in a church choir or church band?

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Can you read any rhythms or music notes?

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">3. Find your student's dream music.

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">A lot of times, your adult student has a dream song or piece of music that they'd always wished they could play. Because they don't have a school ensemble or contest to keep them interested and motivated, I use this dream music as a way to keep them engaged. I have them pick out a few pieces or songs and see if we can include a small chunk into each week's lesson. Right now, one of my student's is working on a Cristofori's Dream, a piece he's always dreamed of playing(ha..ha...ha?).

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">So tell me, do you have adult students in your studio? What do you love about teaching adult students and what are your challenges?

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Find a Happiness 9-1-1 Song

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">This is a tip from one of my favorite podcasts, Happier with Gretchen Rubin. In one of her episodes, she suggests finding a song that will give you a little pick me up when you hear it. It might be an upbeat Top 40 song or a nostalgic song that brings you back. This can be a go to song or playlist to play on your way home from a rough day or during a break to get you through the rest of the day. Need some inspiration? There's a pre-made Spotify playlist from the podcast!

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Take a Short Guided Meditation Break

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Meditation has so many benefits. At first, I was intimidated by meditation. I had always envisioned meditation consisting of someone sitting by themselves on a hard surface for a very, very long time. It doesn't have to be that way! I use a wonderful app on my phone called Meditation Studio. The first course breaks down how to meditate in easy 5-10 minute chunks. After completing the starter course, you can choose guided meditations that focus specifically on stress relief that can be as short as 2 minutes. This can be a perfect break in between classes or at lunch to de-stress.

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Keep a Pick Me Up Box

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Find or purchase a box and fill it with good memories of your teaching career. I recommend plastic since it will hold up a little better rather than a cardboard box. Fill it with student notes or drawings, print out positive parent emails, favorite concert programs, pictures of music making, and anything that will bring a smile to your face. It's great to have the reminder of what I do what I do, especially after a receiving a tough email or having an observation that didn't go exactly as planned. I also put some of my favorite chocolate in my box. You may even want to add a small gift card to your favorite coffee shop to use "in case of emergency" for those extra stressful days.

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Cross curricular activities are great. But sometimes it's tough to marry two subject areas evenly. While using songs to teach addition, grammar, and other concepts is helpful for students, it may not truly be teaching or reinforcing musical concepts. Incorporating rhythm and poetry into a lesson can give both subjects equal attention.

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<img alt="Marry rhythm and poetry together into one activity with rhythm haikus.

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">I like to use haiku poems. They are fun, fairly easy to write, and come with a rich history. Students may even be learning about them in their reading class! A haiku is a traditional Japanese poem written in a 5-7-5 syllable pattern. When translating this into music, I use one syllable=quarter note and two syllables=eighth notes.

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Pick a topic that you want your students to write about. Depending on the grade level and student ability you may choose to provide them with a word list or you may want to brainstorm words with students and categorize them into 1 or 2 syllable words. To help students determine how many syllables a word has, I have them place their hand under their chin and count the number of times their chin taps their hand while they say the word. If a word has more than 2 syllables, you may consider discarding it or fitting it across 2 rhythms (e.g. butterfly as 2 eighths and a quarter).

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Guide students through the haiku 5-7-5 pattern and give them time to work on their own. After writing their poem, students can practice saying the rhythms and/or saying the words rhythmically.

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Do you want to take your students on a field trip but dread volunteer sign ups? Sign Up Genius is the answer!

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Pick a Theme That Works

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Sign up Genius offers countless themes for your sign ups! I love this feature. <span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">The themes are neat and clean.<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"> Volunteers can easily see what kind of event they're signing up for just from the picture.

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">All Dates in One Place

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">One great feature of Sign Up Genius is that if you have a recurring event, such as required chaperones at a rehearsal or event, you can put all the dates on one sign up. Volunteers can easily see where there's a need and what works best for their schedule. You can also keep track of who has signed up in real time. You no longer have the stress of keeping track no of paper slips that often come in past the due date.

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Send Reminders

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">One of my favorite features is the reminder feature. Sign Up Genius will automatically send out a reminder email to your chaperones for upcoming events. This takes the stress out of sending out reminder emails or text messages.

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">I love TED talks! They are just long enough to fit a substantial amount of information and short enough to watch in one sitting. These are a few of my favorite TED talks to inspire music teachers all around!

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Eric Whitacre - A Virtual Choir 2,000 Voices Strong

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Technology is transforming so quickly. It is amazing what happens when you combine technology and music. This TED talk features Eric Whitacre talking about his virtual choir.
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Stefon Harris - There Are No Mistakes on the Bandstand

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Sometimes as music educators, we can get hung up on perfection and can beat ourselves up over mistakes. Mistakes are only often perceived as mistakes because of the way we react to them. It's a good lesson for us as teachers and for our students as well.
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Ken Robinson - Do Schools Kill Creativity?
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">There is certainly a reason why this is one of the most popular TED talks of all time. As music educators, we value creativity. Ken Robinson is a wonderful advocate for nurturing students' creativity.
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Rita Pierson - Every Kid Needs A Champion
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">This is my absolute all time favorite education related TED talk. Rita Pierson reminds us as educators that it is important to believe in our students and foster positive relationships with them.

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

For those of you who love musicals, check out this TED talk! This one is just for fun. Sometimes you need a little laugh after a long school day!

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Gone are the days of boring review sessions. Turn your classroom into a gameshow using Kahoot!

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">What is Kahoot?

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Kahoot is a game-based learning website for all ages. A teacher creates a quiz or "kahoot" containing a series of questions with 2-4 answers. You can also browse the public Kahoot database to see if the material you want to review has been made by another teacher.

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">What do I need to use Kahoot?

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">The teacher will need a device that connects to the internet and a way to project the screen on that device. Students will need a device that connects to the internet. Devices include smart phones, tablets, computers, etc.

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">How does Kahoot work?

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">The teacher will login and "play" the kahoot they are planning to use in the lesson. Students will need to go to kahoot.it (different than the teacher website) and enter the game pin displayed on the screen. Once all of your students have joined, the teacher begins the game.

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">The most awesome feature of Kahoot might be it's ability to assess data. At the end of a game play, the teacher will reach a screen that gives the option to download the results. You have the option to download as an Excel file or download straight to Google Drive.

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">When you open the file, you get an analysis of how each student did overall and how they did on each question. A green mark indicates a correct answer, red indicates incorrect answer. You could use this data as a grade or as a way to inform your teaching.

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Bottom line, students learn while having fun and you get the data you need to assess!

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">I would love to individually assess all of my students on rhythm reading. In reality, that isn't always possible during class because of limited time, shy students, and concert prep time among a million other things. Have access to iPads? The camera/video app can solve your assessment woes! You don't even need a whole class set for this to work!

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">During the 2nd quarter, I used my beginner Nutcracker rhythm composition kit with my 2nd graders. They were instructed to create a 4 beat pattern, read the rhythm using ta's/titi's/to-o, read the rhythm using the Nutcracker words, and then record themselves.

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Tips for Videos

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">1. After students have pressed record, make sure you have them pause briefly before saying anything. Sometimes kids start speaking before they are recording without realizing.

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">2. In order to identify which recording belongs to which student, have them say their first and last name as well as their homeroom/classroom teacher before they start whatever part they will say for the assessment.

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">3. If you choose to have students email their assessments to you, organize the video files by creating a folder for each classroom teacher.

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">4. Don't have access to a full set of iPads? Use it as part of centers activity!

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Gathering Student Work

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">My school is fortunate enough to have a Google Drive folder for each child. Students uploaded their videos to their folders. I was able to go into their folders after school to assess their videos. If you don't have a Google Drive system set up at your school, don't fret! These videos are small enough to be emailed. Here's how:

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">1. Go to the camera roll and select the most recent video. Then tap on the icon that's in the bottom left side of the screen.

2. Select the video you want to send. The current video will come up already selected.

3. Select the send via mail option. The video will automatically compress once you tap the mail icon.

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Starting out lessons with a quick video is a great way to get students hooked on the day's lesson. <span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">This song is sung slowly until the fermata. After the fermata, the song picks up in tempo.<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"> <span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">I like to drag the first part out to really show contrast to the second part. To play the game, students sit in a circle. One student is chosen to walk slowly around the circle while students sing. When the class reaches the fermata, the student taps the shoulder of whoever is in front of them. The chosen student then chases the student around the circle and attempts to tag him/her before the song ends.

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Select Custom Jam Session to let your students choose song, instruments, and venue. The band set up allows students to choose a bass, chord, percussion, melody, and harmony instrument. Instruments range from traditional such as violin and trumpet to world such as the sitar and castanets. Bouncing blobs at the bottom show students the steady beat, which can help reinforce playing in time/on the steady beat. At the end, students can watch their performance by selecting View Replay.

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">This game is a great way to reinforce aural skills. A player is randomly selected to complete a challenge. These challenges include tasks like putting notes in order from high to low, finding the Mii who plays the same pitch as the given pitch(picture below), finding the instrument(out of a group of 4 instruments) who made a mistake in the music, picking the group that sings "like a sunny day" (major vs minor), and many more. Players earn points by selecting the correct answer. The quicker they find the answer, the more points they earn. This game can be used as a whole class review in single player mode.

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">This game allows players to become orchestra conductors. The Wii controller becomes the baton. When more than one controller is involved in this mini game, the object is to conduct at the same time. This game can be used to reinforce steady beat and give students a chance to experience what it's like to be in front of an orchestra. At the conclusion of the game, a score is given on how accurate the conductors were. I will warn you, the multiplayer aspect of this game is more difficult than you'd think!

window.location = "http://musicwithmissw.com/2017/04/27/2-4-6-8-ta-titi-partner-activity/";

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">This month, my kinders are starting to explore short and long sounds. We transitioned to call these short and long sounds ta and titi during this week's classes through 2-4-6-8 Meet Me at the Garden Gate.

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">I believe 2-4-6-8 is meant to be a chant but I wanted to add pitches to continue to reinforce sol-mi-la. Here's what I did:

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">After discovering one sound in one steady beat is a ta and two sounds in one steady beat is a titi, I added a partner hand clapping activity. First we practiced keeping the steady beat by using a pat-clap pattern. Then I had them practice pat-clap-pat-hands up. The hands up motion preps them for high five-ing their partner later. Once students can comfortably sing and do the pat-clap-pat-hands up motion, I put them into partners. First we practiced the pat-clap-pat-high five partner motion alone and then we put it with music!

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">November is a time for post-Halloween candy, blustery days, and, of course, Thanksgiving! This week, my students are playing a fun Thanksgiving (assessment) game to get them in the spirit of the holiday.

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">This song/game is called Turkey, Turkey, Turkey!

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">To play the game, students sit in a circle. One student sits outside of the circle, facing away from students. Students sing the song and pass a turkey around the circle. I used a Turkey printed on a paper but a stuffed animal would work great as well! Whoever has the turkey on the word day "hides the turkey before Thanksgiving Day" by putting the printed or stuffed animal Turkey behind their back. The student who is sitting outside of the circle remains facing away from the rest of the class and sings "Turkey, where are you?" (sol mi mi sol mi). The student who is hiding the turkey sings "you'll never find me" (sol mi mi sol mi). The student sitting outside the circle has three tries to guess who sang "you'll never find me" without looking. <span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">The individual singing responses gave me a chance to assess my students' singing.

Now What?

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">It's the end of music class. You line students up, make sure they're standing quiet and still, and open up the door to send them on their way. Much to your surprise(or not!), their teacher isn't there. You estimate you have anywhere from 30 seconds to 5 minutes before the teacher will pick up your students. During that time, students can get pretty restless! Here are some ides on how to keep students occupied while waiting to be picked up.

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">1. Ask review questions about the concept(s) you covered in class.

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">2. Sing a favorite song.

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">3. <span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Ask students to share any "good news" they have.

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">4. Play an inner hearing game. Take a familiar tune and have students only sing the first word of each line, the last word of each line, the words that rhyme, etc.

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">5. Sing Happy Birthday to someone who has an upcoming birthday

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">6. Ask students to name one thing that went well in music and one thing they could do better.

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">7. <span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Sing part of a song for an upcoming concert.

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">8. Give standing in line musical meaning! Practice standing like "performers on stage." The more they can practice standing still, smiling, and quiet, the better!

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">9. Review technique for singing and/or playing. Tell students you are going to demonstrate a skill two ways, one is right and one is wrong. Demonstrate something, such as singing posture: slumped vs. straight and tall. Have students put up one or two fingers to show which one they think is the correct way.

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">10. Copy me rhythms or sol fege patterns. You can clap, say, or sing a pattern and students repeat the pattern after you. This is especially good for younger students.

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">11. Review words on your word wall.

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">12. Ask students what their favorite activity in music is.

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">13. Rapid fire Q&A. Ask a question that will have a 1-3 word answer, gives students 10 seconds to think of their answer, and go down the line quickly. I used this technique on Halloween when every student wanted to tell me what they were going to dress up as.

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">14. Name that tune. Hum or play a few lines of a tune that students may know and see if students can guess what it is!

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">15. Play a short clip of instrumental music. Keep a playlist on hand just for instances like this!

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">While it may not be convenient when students are picked up late, you might as well make the most of those few extra moments!

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">There are so many great app lists out there for music education. The problem I found is that they don't always have reviews attached to them. I decided to download as many apps as I could find and test them all out. Here's what I found when it came to composing apps!

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">The Good

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Tune Train

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Pros: Easy to use, built using music theory concepts, students can see their composition on a staff, several accompaniment options for student compositions

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Cons: No way to export/save the music that is created, no option to change the instrument that plays the melody

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Cost: FREE

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Apple: https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/tunetrain/id702713073?mt=8

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Android: n/a

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Tune Train is probably the most musically intuitive app I found. It was clearly designed with the music teacher in mind. Students guide a train to different stops. The train stops represent various musical ideas such as high/low(pitch) ad close together/far apart(rhythm).

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">There is an option for students to view their composition written out on a staff. While the compositions cannot be exported, students can easily take a screenshot of their Tune Train composition to use in another activity such as playing the melody on Orff instruments.

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

Each level has a few different options to choose from.

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">The Lego Movie Music Maker

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Pros: Characters that students like and recognize, variety of instruments for composing, save and share option

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Cons: Lego loops don't always mesh well with base songs

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Cost: FREE

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">This app works well in a browser on iPads. Students choose a song "base," such as the "Everything is Awesome" song, and then add their composition on top of it. Colored lego pieces each have their own sound loop ranging from percussion to vocal exclamations. Legos can be placed on and off the beat. This app is basically a simplified version of Garageband.

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Pros: cross curricular with art, real instrument sounds, wide variety of instruments to choose from, music concepts such as chord progressions and beat placement are apparent

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Cons: if students "color" the pictures, it tends to sound like a cacophony of sound rather than a piece of music, no option to export song - only to save in the app

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Cost: FREE

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">This app combines the world of art and music. Students can choose from several coloring pages to color in. Each color represents an instrument family (ex - various shades of green are woodwinds). It might be a good app to use when teaching instrument families. All sounds in the app are recordings of real instruments.

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Glitchamphone

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Pros: ability to add multiple measures to create a longer piece of music, shows 4/4 beat pattern, options to adjust tempo and sound levels, includes mode to compose using a grid/colors and mode to create/record own patterns

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Cons: limited amount of instrument choices, the app takes a little exploration to access all of the fun features - may not be suitable for younger students

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Cost: $1.99

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">This app would be good to use in conjunction with a lesson on the recording industry. Students can record and fine tune their own music on a grid, similar to recording and editing MIDI sounds. This app includes a handy tutorial built into it that will help students find all of the app features.

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: x-small;">Pros: world music instruments available for composition, all paid options can be "purchased" through enough earning coins, control over musical ideas such as tempo and pitch, option for free play on instruments

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: x-small;">Cons: no easy way to delete/erase a composition once you create it, only 3 free instruments, no way to export compositions

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: x-small;">In the composition component of this app, students can fill in blocks representing either different pitches or timbres.The only reason why I put this under the bad category is because once a composition is finished, there is no way to start over again from scratch. If students wanted to start a new composition, they would have to uncheck all of the filled in white boxes, which is simply not practical to use as a composition app in the classroom.

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: x-small;">Pros: easy to use

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: x-small;">Cons: does not include option to save composition unless you pay to upgrade to PRO, only one instrument sound available for free, does not have any true educational concepts

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: x-small;">Cons: not particularly educational, ads for Trident Vitality are present

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: x-small;">This app may be good for pre-k and k students to use to explore and create sound. window.location = "http://musicwithmissw.com/2017/04/22/fall-is-in-the-air-singing-game-and-assessment/";

Fall is certainly in the air here in North Carolina. While the days are still hot and sunny, mornings are crisp and cool. With this in mind, I thought it would be fun to sing about the change in seasons with my kindergartners!

I started by asking if someone knew what season is coming up next. A few enthusiastic hands shot up. After we determined the next season is fall, I read a short book about fall. There are so many great options out there!

Next we learned a song/game celebrating fall called "Fall is in the Air!" Students sit in a circle while three chosen students stand in the center of the circle and pick a fall object. I printed out pictures of a scarecrow, pumpkin, squirrel, acorn, pile of leaves, and sun flower. I did not have time to laminate my pictures this time around but will definitely do so in the future!

The whole group sings this song while the three students "show off" their fall objects:

Fall is in the air!

s m s m s

Fall is in the air!

s m s m s

Gather round,

s s m

Let us see!

s s m

What do you have here?

s s m l s

Students in the center of the circle are called on one by one to sing what they have with this response:

I have a _______________.

s m m s-m or just s depending on syllables

The whole group responds immediately after with:

She/he has a ________________.

s m m s-m or just s depending on syllables

This group response is a good sol mi reinforcer.

Assessment

I assessed students on their individual response with the following rubric:
4. Sings sol mi pattern in correct key

3. Sings sol mi pattern in tune but in a different key
2. Sings but does not sing sol mi pattern
1. Uses speaking voice, even with I sing, you sing prompt
0. Would not attempt to sing, even with I sing, you sing prompt

Students spent about 7-8 minutes are each of the four centers I had set up. I created these centers with the intention of incorporating other subjects.
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

Music and Math
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">This station combines rhythm, addition, and composition into one activity. Students started by practicing writing notes. I created a quick practice work sheet for quarter, half, and eighth notes.
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Next students became rhythm composers! Students were instructed to write out a four beat rhythm pattern using quarter, eighth, and half notes. They labeled the number of beats each note received and then wrote an addition sentence to double check they had four beats. One student even commented to me, "Hey! This is kind of like what we do in math class."
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Music and Art

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">I had two music and art stations in this batch of centers. One was color by note. These color by note worksheets are a musical spin on the popular color by number! I made this activity into a coloring contest for students. I plan to feature the best colored owls on my fall bulletin board. If you're interested in the fall color by note worksheets, you can find them here.

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">The other music and art center was the draw what you hear center. I played two short pieces of music for students over the stereo system. Students used their imagination to draw scenes to match the music. Playing music out loud also helps keep the noise level down at other centers.

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Music and Technology

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Students at this station used the iPads to create their own compositions by using the free app TuneTrain. Students guide a train through towns to pick up people at their houses. Each person has a specific pitch. The higher the house, the higher the note. The closer together the houses selected, the shorter the rhythm will be. Students can also choose the accompaniment style (examples include pop, classical, R&B, and more) and have the option of viewing their composition notated on staff. Its a great way to get students thinking about basic music theory concepts!

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">SQUILT is one of my students' all time favorite activities. What is SQUILT you ask? SQUILT stands for Super Quiet UnInterrupted Listening Time. During SQUILT time in my classroom, students listen to a piece of music and then imagine a story in their head. It is a great, fun way to introduce classical music to young children. Students do this activity immediately following the Welcome to Music song we sing each week.
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">I have my students spread out, sit or lay down, and close their eyes. I let them listen to about 2-3 minutes of music and then have them sit back on the carpet. I choose 3-6 students a week to share their stories, depending on how elaborate the stories are. I post the Youtube videos on my website each week so students can share the music and their stories with their parents/guardians!

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">You don't have to use SQUILT every week though! Use it as a brain break, an extra time activity, or just something fun and different. They can journal, draw/color what they hear, describe music using musical terms, or simply put their heads on their desks, close their eyes, and imagine!

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Lastly, here are the musical selections I've used for SQUILT so far:
